why not do somethign recent that would interest and engage everybody.

*the current war in Iraq

*weither or not Bush should have won the election even though Gore got the popular vote.

*How we feel about the fact that even though Bush has an approval rating that has swooped below 30% we still allow him to run our country.

Both the USA and the USSR , in different ways, have experienced the side-effects of a struggle between ideology and greed, both resulting in extremes that served no good purpose for the people under either., right? In the USA the ‘threat’ of communism of the USSR in particular was exaggerated ( or not ?) and fear of it was promoted ( why? or was it not?) Was only the Russian-style communism , which was or was not considered as a threat? Were ( or were not? ) other moderate varieties in Europe suspected and ostracized? Was that fear a consequence of propaganda ? Or real threat? Was that fear of capitalism in the USSR real or exaggerated? When two ideas conflict, each becomes more extreme, and both sides miss the fact that the best way is somewhere in between, Righ or not? What might have been achieved if there had not been the confrontation between these two giant countries ? True, the USSR as a Union collapsed in 1980, when Lithuania ( the first of the 15 other countries declared its Independence. The country with only 3.5 million people against the huge powerful Soviet military machine). Thank you for accepting my suggestion for a debate.Myself I am Lithuanian .

Suppose the other party had won a war, would they’ve been considered heroes ?

Example… In WW2 the Germans lost the war. I don’t want to justify or turn down what happened back then.

A lot of Germans nowadays, even 3-4rd generation kids… still apologize for being German while they were born 30-50 years after the war. Should they ?

How would I, as 3rd generation, have presented myself when I’d visit Germany and the outcome of the war had been different ?

In other terms, how subjective is the outcome of a war and how does it influence the people of countries born during/after the war ?

The New Deal: necessary economic stimulus or bureaucratic nightmare?

If you want a more current one: Should George Bush be impeached? There are many sub-issues here, such as (1) Has he committed impeachable offenses? (2) If so, would impeaching him when he has only a short time remaining be worth our while? (3) Would his impeachment show the world that our system works to prevent a President from seizing more power than the Constitution gives him? (4) What effect would his impeachment have on the upcoming presidential nominations and election?

G’day Azelora,

Thank you for your question.

It depends on the type of history being studied.

Assuming that it is American history, good questions with themes across several decades would be:

* the growth of America as a world power;

*the growth of the role of the Federal Government in American life;

*the development of civil rights movements after the Second World War;

*the influence of the American Supreme Court.

Good luck.

Regards

In conflict resolution:

Education + Dialogue + Negotiation instead of Hostile Engagement

There are several national and international conflicts that have occurred since 1900 that can be used to debate this.
