4x-2y=20

x+2y=8
-2y -2y
x=8-2y so plug back into first eqation
8-2y+2y=8
8+0y=8
-8 -8
0y=0 then divide both sides by zero to solve for y
y=0 then go back to original equation plug in zero for y and that would make x=8

Hey alli d, how do you know x=0 and y=4 for the first one for example? That’s just one possible answer. What’s wrong with x=8 and y=0? That works too. The problem is you can’t solve for 2 variables with just one equation to work with. You need at least as many equations as you have variables to solve for any variable.
Also, that second one is not an equation – no equal sign.

It sounds like you just don’t want to do the work. If you’re bad at them ask for help. What if it was on a test? Ask your teacher
or someone else to help understand how to work out the problem.
