First, check to see if the same numbers are in parentheses.

Remember what’s in parentheses stays together as a group.

(1+2)+3 = 3+(1+2) –that’s commutative because (1+2) and the 3 have simply changed places, like 3+4=4+3.

However, in your case, what’s in the parentheses has changed, so that would be the associative property. Think of this: with addition, it doesn’t make a difference which numbers hang out together; you still get the same answer. Like kids on a bus: it doesn’t matter who sits together in which seats; they’ll all get to school.
