This is the period when most of the major developments needed to maintain life occur. The heart, brain, and lungs are all beginning to form during this time. Also, a woman’s body at this time sees the embryo as a foreign object, and will try to attack it.

A teratogen is anything that can cause a birth defect. The reason the embryonic stage is particularly vulnerable is because the first trimester of pregnancy is the time for fetal limb and organ generation. After that point, the fetus grows and develops but the basic structures are all in place. So, the first trimester, and more specifically the time between the 3rd and 12th weeks of pregnancy are the critical weeks for organ and limb formation. Hope this helps you.
