What kind of literary device is this quote an example of? It’s from “Almost a Woman” by Esmeralda Santiago.

“A couple of months after his son was born, Francisco died. Mami’s usually lively and curious eyes dulled, looked inward, WHERE WE COULDN’T REACH HER WITH HUGS AND KISSES.” (the capitalized part, mostly). I have no idea what literary device this is. It’s not quite personification, really, but… help, please! thanks =]

Michelle,

This passage simply shows some metaphors. The eyes rolling inward don’t literally happen. This is simply a metaphor for the person who is psychologically turning away. Eyes do not literally “turn inward,” but figuratively and metaphorically they do. The eyes certainly would not receive hugs and kisses. Hugs and kisses might be a metaphor for other outward forms of displaying endearment, or they could be taken literally.
