What is the significance of Patroclus in The Iliad?

Does he give insight to Achilles’ character? Is he like a reflection of Achilles?

He’s Achilles’ best friend, and it’s his death at Hector’s hands that causes Achilles to finally stop sulking and go fight the Trojans. He does highlight some different aspects of Achilles’ character–the fact that he cares about his friends, for example. And if I remember correctly, he tried to resolve Achilles’ quarrel with Agamemnon. So yeah–he does give insight into Achilles’ character.
