The amount of carbon in the sample is 97.1 x 12/44 = 26.48 mg. The amount of hydrogen in the sample is 17.0 x 2/18 = 1.89 mg. These add to 28.37 mg, so 15.13 mg of the sample is oxygen. Now we’ll play numbers:

C: 26.48/12 = 2.2067.

H: 1.89/1 = 1.89.

O: 15.13/16 = 0.9456.

Dividing these results by 0.9456 gives 1, 2, and 2.333. The simplest molecular formula which can arise from this is C7H6O3. The molecular weight of this is 138. How about that! We’re done.
