The independent variable is the condition that you change in an experiment to see if you get a change in the second variable (dependent), that depends on it. The independent variable acts alone (independently).
Example: Variables are: 1. heat and 2. time it takes for a frog to jump out of hot water.
Put a frog in a pot of water and turn on the heat.
The heat is the independent variable, because you can move the temperature up and down independently. The time that it takes for a frog to jump out of hot water is the “dependent” variable, because how fast it jumps out depends upon the heat of the water (also a dependent variable), which depends on how high you turn up the heat (independent variable).
Do I qualify for a hot nerd?? 🙂

The independent variable can work alone to do whatever it has to do and the dependent variable needs to work off of something
