I’m sorry I can’t speak of Tom Sawyer specifically, but Mark Twain certainly had very stong views regarding money in general. Twain was noted for his witty quotes just as much as he was for his written works, and the following are a number of his quotes having to do with money. Hopefully this will still help in some way!

“The lack of money is the root of all evil.”

“Honesty is the best policy – when there is money in it.”

“Some men worship rank, some worship heroes, some worship power, some worship God, & over these ideals they dispute & cannot unite–but they all worship money.”

“I am opposed to millionaires, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position.”

“October: This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February.”

“A dollar picked up in the road is more satisfaction to us than the 99 which we had to work for, and the money won at Faro or in the stock market snuggles into our hearts in the same way.”

“The holy passion of Friendship is of so sweet and steady and loyal and enduring a nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked to lend money.”

“Virtue has never been as respectable as money.”
