Chromatography includes a variety of methods to resolve solutes based on differential migration velocity when the sample is passed through a porous medium. The components in a sample are separated because of their differential affinity to a stationary phase (solid or liquid ). Sample components are carried by a mobile phase (gas or liquid). The affinity for the stationary phase is base upon: adsorption, ion exchange, and solution in a stationary solvent. All the chromatography techniques encompasse two or more of these phenomena usually working at the same time. This paper includes only gas chromatography. Therefore, a Hewlett packard HP5890 SERIES II chromatograph (referred as HP 5890 later) will be described here as well as two useful accessories: automatic sampler HP7673, and the corresponding integrator HP 3396.
