What is a book with the theme you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone?

I need to write a practice essay in preperation for the SAT; I was given the theme (in lamemans terms) ‘You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone’ and need a literary reference to support or disprove this statement.

Try reading the short story by Salman Rushdie “The Prophet’s Hair.” (And FYI, the term is layman’s not lamemans 🙂 )

the first book of The Bible: Genesis

They didn’t know what they had so they ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge in the center of the garden and came to realize paradise was gone.

Eve had to undergo labor pains, Adam had to work and they both eventually had to die.

And, do you think the forbidden fruit in the center of the garden was symbolic of something?
