Andrew Carnegie is the first person that came to mind, but his achievements were before and then into the early 20th century. He was the richest man in the world with the Industrial Revolution…that:

conflict: made machines that replaced people, putting them out of work

compromise: machines mass produced, easing workers’ jobs and lowering prices to consumers.

More into the 20th century though, how about Watergate, when President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard Nixon?

http://watergate.info/ford/pardon.shtml

Conflict: Nixon broke the law, hearings took place on TV as Americans saw the extent of their President stealing and lying…leading to impeachment consideration.

Compromise: Nixon stepped down, VP Ford became President Ford, and then Ford compromised by pardoning Nixon so the country could move on.

If it doesn’t have to be a person, you might as well have FUN and consider Roswell, NM surrounding UFO’s — conflict: is there or isn’t there alien life? Compromise: Let’s hide it from the public and say they’re weather balloons; also ignore that Air Force pilots have seen them. Compromise and make the citizen feel safe. How about Margaret Sanger? Sanger, an early 20th century birth control advocate, tried to educate women on how their bodies worked so they could make conscious choices on how and when (or not) to have children. Sanger faced a lot conflict and pressure for trying to disseminate information about sexuality and was even arrested several times for publicly speaking about sexuality and birth control.
