What does wiser mean in this sentene: “No one was wiser for some 50 years.”?

this is from a report that i am doin on Voltaire and it happened in the Renaissance time period

Some more context might help, but I would interpret the sentence to mean “No one knew about whatever was being discussed for some 50 years.”

Using context clues will be invaluable in finding out things like this.

what I can see from the clues is that maybe someone told a lie or something like that and no one found out for 50 years, or maybe there was a really wise guy that no one could beat for 50 years…

but in order to answer the question we really need more to go on…

more words would have been useful but it might be that who ever they were talking about in the sentence ot two before, noone was wiser than that person for some 50 yrs
