What do they mean by this?

I’m doing my summer assignment and it says “Prepare a chart for these 2 characters with the headlines Personal Qualities, Motives, Feelings towards others, goals and personal philosophies”

What do they mean by motives?

They want you to provide a motive because it is what drives the character of the story. It is what motivates their actions.

By asking for a motive they want you to explain why the person does what they do.

In other words, if I’m driving down the highway and see a cute girl with a flat tire and stop to help, is my motive to get some exercise by changing a flat tire, or is it to hopefully get a date?

Sometimes motives are obvious and sometimes they aren’t. This is what is meant by the term ulterior motive. I may pretend that I’m helping the cute girl change her tire just because I’m a nice guy but my ulterior (or hidden) motive is to get a date.

LEMME ANSWER THAT!
The “motive” is the reason behind the action. It answers the question, “Why did they do that?” or “what does that character want?”
