The text beside the painting is self-explanatory

A depiction of people feeling trapped & vulnerable – going in circles (carousel) – can’t stop the momentum of the war.

Well judging by the blatant conformity of the subjects (all in soldiers’ outfits) it seems to symbolise the lack of individuality the fighters in war have. By going to war they lose their identity, they are no more than men being sent off under all-encompassing titles such as the 5th Battalion to fight, and die.

The other people appear stuck on a ‘ride’ they have no choice but to ride – thrown into a war, and a life, that they have no control over.

Also the depiction of the soldiers riding a merry-go-round (or carousel if you’re American) seems to depict the war as a whole, pushing forwards machine-like (a common symbol) and also the futility of such a war, going in circles, ending up where you left off.

It means that the painter had a very complicated idea of what is and is not.

Well it just might but then it could be something much different.

I think the website explains it all. The machine of war that goes round and round and round, but doesn’t really get anyone anywhere.
