What are the conflict(s), resolution(s), and climax for the story Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge?
Favorite Answer
The conflict in the story is that there is a man about to be hung… I don’t recall the story ever mentioning a name for him. I believe he tried to burn down a bridge so that the Union Army couldn’t cross. Anyways, he’s about to be hung, and he’s thinking all of these things about his family and how he will escape and such. When the soldiers drop the board from beneath him, the rope snaps, and he swims away as fast as he can while being shot at and pursued by the soldiers. Eventually he swims far enough away to get to a place that he knows how to get home from, and he starts running toward home. When he walks in the gate and is about to embrace his wife, the story goes back to reality and the man dies when he is actually hung.
So, if you followed that at all, the conflicts would probably be both the Union Army vs. the man and reality vs. the thoughts of the man.
The climax is when the man seems to have escaped and is about to embrace his wife, and then the sudden snap back to reality.
The resolutions are-
Union Army vs. the man- the army obviusly comes out on top here- the man was hung and the bridge was not burned down, because they managed to hang the Confederate supporting man from it.
Reality vs. the thoughts of the man- Reality won. The man is dead, not hugging his wife.
Good luck!
