Significant figures tell you how good a measurement is. They are used in science calculations and usually not in math.
To multiply and divide you take the least amount of significant figures and round your answer so that it is the same, for instance 6×4 = 24, 6 is 1 sig fig, 4 is 1 sig fig so your answer should be 20 which has 1 sig fig.
Adding and subtracting you keep the least significant place, so if you add
1.1
+ .234
= 1.334 the final answer would be
1.3 so that only the tenths place is significant.
