Laws – Lots of goofy laws.
Legal System – Defends the rights of the individual – sometimes to the point that it is difficult to get a conviction because the rights of the accused are perceived to have been violated. And if a conviction is obtained, the punishment is very lax. Many citizens are up in arms about this, but have as yet found no recourse. There is no death penalty in Canada and if a trial is delayed for any reason, the accused is given time off in the form of twice the time they were imprisoned, to be credited against their sentence. So if your trial was delayed by a year, you would be given two years off of whatever your sentence is. Killing someone with a car rarely even gets a two year sentence, so in many cases, people are getting off with little more than a slap on the wrist.
Languages – Canada is officially bilingual. All government documents are published in both French and English. In recent years, the Inuit language has been recognized and government documents in the far north are published in the three official languages. The same courtesy has not been given to speakers of other First Nations languages, and these languages are dying off at an alarming rate.
In the meantime, more and more official government documents are being printed in Cantonese, Vietnamese, Urdu and Hindi, to reflect the large number of immigrants from these countries, and native born Canadians who speak the language of their forefathes, instead of learning to speak one of Canada’s official languages. Go figure.
