Siddartha started his spiritual quest as a Saddhu – which is a hindu holy man who disregards the physical world to concentrate on meditation to the point that they starve themselves- he found this was as distracting as his life in the palace, however (it’s hard to concentrate when your malnorished), and this led him to come up with the whole middle way thing (neither living too luxurious or too spartan a lifestyle).
