The metamorphosis is another story where Kafka tries to reconcile his tortured relationship with his father and his own impotence in dealing with his family. The steady progression (lack of it really) of Gregor into a bug on his back (utter helplessness) is a wished-for occurrence. No amount of hand wringing can change the fact that Gregor wills himself to change into a loathsome creature, shunned by all.

He learns that he alone has been supporting the family, but his loss of his job is not a problem, since he has saved enough to support the family for at least 2 years, which he is thrilled about.
