The days of your youth can be the best of your entire life?

What would the one word simple subject be and the main verb be?

I was thinking the subject is youth and the verb is can be.

Think of it this way. What is the active word or phrase? It’s “can be”, and “can” is a modifier of the verb “be”.

So, WHAT “can be”? “The days” can be. (“of your youth” is a modifying phrase that tells WHICH “DAYS”). Take away the modifer, “the”, and you get the subject – “days”.

Subject, “days”; verb, “be”.

“Days” is the simple subject. “Can be” is the helping verb + verb.

Youth isn’t it because you do this with prepositional phrases (of your youth) & mentally take them out of the sentence, when you look for subjects & verbs!
