The person around whom the action revolves, whose actions affect the other characters, and who sets the story in motion.

There may be two or more central characters, who are in conflict with each other or share the same experience but in different ways.

In some stories, the central character may not be a person at all but an animal (Jack London’s “White Fang”) or even the physical environment (Nature or some built environment).
