Tutoring at my high school Homework Center was the perfect opportunity for personal growth. At first I was a little apprehensive about tutoring. The kids did not ask for my help, and I was sure they felt like they did not need it. As time passed I began to realize that most of them were just too afraid to ask for help. In turn, I was too afraid to push past their initial response of “No.” It took some time, but I realized that in order to be a successful tutor I would have to find a way to help the students that needed it; even if they could not ask. I, the shy girl, devised a plan to approach my students with a joke and casual conversation. Once I could get them talking about what they were doing I could find out what they needed to know. The plan worked like a charm. Today my students willingly ask for help when they need it. In exchange for my knowledge of Algebra, English, Biology, and other subjects, tutoring has reinforced my passion to help others. It has helped me better deal with rejecection and taught me how to warm up to people. Teaching has also helped me to make new friends, and even helped me to come out of my shell. These are priceless gifts I am sure to never forget.
