Introduction Paragraph:
On March 20, 2003 the United States launched Operation Iraqi Freedom, in which the U.S. invaded Iraq. In the four years that have elapsed since then, Americans have grown tired of unfulfilled promises of Iraqi Democracy and weary of the severe costs, lives and money, to fund the war. This is evident from an initial approval of 70% at the launch of the war and a severe drop to 30% as of September 2007. As disapproval for the war increases, the likelihood for a pull out before the mission is accomplished becomes more and more evident. Realistically, a lasting democracy in Iraq is not a feat the United States can accomplish.

The doubts about America’s ability to help an Iraqi democracy take root continue to mount. Iraqi history suggests that perhaps Iraqi society is not well-suited for a democratic form of government. As a colonial power, the British were unable to foster stability in Iraq. Observations seem to indicate that the Iraqis are increasingly resentful toward the American presence. Most of all, less than one-third of Americans currently approve of the continued American military deployment in Iraq. An American troop pullout from Iraq without accomplishing the mission originally set forth is a very real prospect.
