Steps of this proof?????

If c is not equal to 0 and cx=1 then x=1/c

1) c is not = to 0 and cx=1

2) 1/c is a real number

3)1/c(cx) = 1/c x 1

4) (1/c x c)x = 1/c x 1

5) 1x = 1/c x 1

6) therefore/triangle made up of 3 dots x = 1/c

Could you give me the reasons for the 6 steps?

I think the first is given

I’m not sure why you need six steps. To go from “cx=1” to “x=1/c”, you just have to divide both sides of the equation by ‘c’. This must be ok, because you are told that ‘c <> 0′.

The six steps are just a roundabout way of doing the same thing.

2. We know that c <> 0, therefore 1/c is a real number (it wouldn’t be, if c = 0).

3. Multiple both sides of the equation by (1/c).

(allowed because if B = C, AB = AC)

4. Group the constant terms on the LHS of the equation together. (allowed because A(BC) = (AB)C)

5. The ‘c’s on the LHS cancel out to leave 1. (allowed because c<>0 and C/C = 1)

6. Remove the extra ‘1 from the RHS (allowed because 1xA = A).

It all seems a bit pointless, really.
