The first step is to combine all the y terms on one side of the equation so you can solve:

xy – y = x + y – y

xy – y = x

Now that all the y pieces are on one side of the equation, you should factor out a y:

y(x – 1) = x

To get the y by itself, all you have to do is divide both sides by (x-1)

y(x-1) / (x-1) = x/(x-1)

Giving you a final answer of

y = (x) / (x-1)

Subtract x from both sides. So xy – x = y. Basic algebra.

xy – y = x

y (x-1) = x

y = x/(x-1)
