-2(4)+2(5)

-8+10(when you add a neg to a pos., you actually subtract the smaller number from the greater one and give the sign of the greater one.)

+2

(-2 x 4) + (2 x 5)

-8 + 10 = 2

When you are multiplying, then a negative and a positive equals a negative, but when you are adding or subtracting, it is different. Say you reversed them:

10 – 8 = it would equal 2, not negative two.

Seriously though…
Just plug 4 into the x

-2(4)

and plug the 5 into y

2(5)

and add… -2(4)+2(5) = well, its your homework!

wow… they’re GIVING you what X and Y equal, hon. Just plug those numbers into the equation and do the basic math. If you have difficulty with basic multiplication, addition, and order of operations, you may need to speak with your guidance counselor about being placed in a different math class until you’re truly ready for Algebra. Seriously — there is no valor and no benefit in taking a class before you are comfortable with the prerequisite knowledge/skill.
