Simple Math Question?
2 children make a theatre play. Tickets for the play cost 50 cents for boys, 20 cents for girls, and 1 cent for pets. There are 100 seats, and each is filled. They make $10 from the play. How many boys, girls, and pets are there?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Favorite Answer
G = # girls
P = # pets
B+G+P=100 (assuming the pets get a seat)
0.50B + 0.20G + 0.01P = 10
you have two equations, but three unknowns. But you also know you do not have fractions of boys, girls, or pets. Whole numbers only. We also know there are multiples of ten pets: 0, 10, 20 30, …
50B + 20G = 1000-P
B+G=100-P
if there were zero pets,
50B+20G=1000
B+G=100
G=100-B
50B+20(100-B)=1000
30B+2000=1000
30B=-1000
B=-1000/30 ?!?!?! makes no sense
try 10 pets
50B+20G=990
B+G=90
G=90-B
50B+20(90-B)=990
30B+1800=990
B<0 again the trick is that 20*(100-P) < 1000-P 2000-20P < 1000-P 1000<19P 1000/19
hope i helped
