Carbon – 13 has 7 neutrons

Carbon – 14 has 8 neutrons

Nitrogen – 14 has 7 neutrons

So it’s carbon – 14

The number after the element is the mass number, which is the sum of the protons and the neutrons in the atom. Since you know the amount of protons in each atom, you can subtract that from the number after the element (mass number) to get the number of neutrons.

Carbon-14

Why?

Well, the numbers to the sides of the elements are the mass numbers…so the

# of protons + the # of neutrons = the mass.

Carbon has 6 protons, so

14 (mass) – 6 (# of protons) = 8 (# of neutrons)
