What you need is an hour glass that is open on the top. Then, on a holder (similar to the one you use in the lab for heating a retort above a flame) place your sand supply, which will drain into the hour glass at a predetermined, steady rate. When you have reached the point where you want to stop the flow, simply slide a piece of cardboard of any other firm disc, across the opening of the hour glass.

The neat thing about science is that it isn’t stupid and figuring out how to do this experiment is as important as finding the results of using it.

You have to build something that measures time, so you’re building an hour glass, yes? I presume that it’s supposed to be able to stop and start – sort of a “stopglass”? Why not just make a small cut at the narrow space of the hour glass so that you can put, say, an index card in to block the sand? You might need to use a gasket of some kind to keep the sand from leaking out around the cut.

Check this link out for help with writing up the project.

water! take two soda bottles (preferably about 2liter sizes), fill one with water, join them together at the necks with a strong tape. when you invert one, the water will spill into the one below. flip it over and it does it again. time it to see how long it takes the water to go from the top bottle to the lower one and that is how your “hour glass” is timed. I.E. if it takes 20 secs for the water to go through, then you have a 20sec timer.

side note, this is usually used for “bottle tornados” but you get the same affect. You could slow or speed time by making using thicker liquids like corn syrup and another with water.

Don’t wait until the last minute to start a project like this.

Make sure that the necks of the hourglass taper (so the sand can’t easily transfer) and when you reach the time you want, turn the hourglass on its side.
