Rules of division?

First you have to clear the decimal out of 1.8 so to do that you have to move it to the right one place. now it is 18.
Next since you moved the decimal one place to make your divisor a whole number you have to move the decimal point in your dividend to the right one place as well so 72.9 so it becomes 729.
18 will not go into 7 so you move over one place or to 72. 18 wiill go into 72. and the quoitent will be least than ten.
So you divide 72 by 18 which gives you. 4 and no remainder.
i.e 18 X 4 = 72 and
72 – 72= 0
now you bring down the next number which is what the 9 right?
your reminder was 0 so now you have 09 which you have to divide by 18.
9/18 = less than one correct meaning in long handed division 18 will not go into 9 and give an integer (whole number)
so that digit in your quoitent i.e. answer is going to be 0.
and 9 – 0 = gives you a remainder of 9
Here before you go any further you have to bring your decimal point up to the quoitent or answer. because you are about to start dividing on the other side of the decimal point.
that means 40. the decimal point right behind the 0.
Now you bring the next digit down which is a 0 Recall after you moved the decimal poing over it became 729.0
once the 0 is brought down that gives you 90 to divide by 18
90/18 = 5 and no remainder.
so you answer is 40.5 degrees Celicus.
Always clear the decimal point out of your divisor and move the decimal point over in your dividend the numbers of places you had to move the decimal point over in divisor.
When dividing long hand: If the remainder and the number you brought down is less than the number you are dividing by you write a 0 in the answer and bring down the next number.
With your decimal point you put it straight over the decimal point in your dividend after you have moved it over the numbers of places you had to move the deciaml point in the divisor to make the divisor a whole num, ber.
Hope that helps a little. Hard to explain without a chalk board. and no math card in computer. .
Step 1: 72.9/1.8, you get a “4” for 4*18=72
Step 2: 72.9 – 72 (from the last step) = 9
Step 3: Compare what you got from last step, which in this case is “9”, to the divisor “18”, you got that “9” is smaller than “18”. So you got to put a “0” over here. Otherwise, you don’t have to put zero over here.
Hope this will help.
Now the zero problem.. when you’re doing long division, just remember that when you end up with a sub-dividend that’s less than you’re divisor, you should place zero directly above, and then add another zero in the end of the sub-dividend to make it work.
example:
_____40.5
18 | 729.0
___-72
_____09
____-00
