i dont get it..can someone please explain it to me because tomorrow i have a test over it and since i was absent when the teacher explained it yeaah i dont know anything

so can somone please help and explain what they are and everything i have read about it in my math book but i dont get the information they give

Alrite so basiclly a function is where for every value of X you get only ONE value of Y for example, Y=3X+4 in this case its a function because it would be impossible for one value of X to have TWO values of Y,

A relation is when you have more than one Y value for one X value for example Y=(square root) of X

if X is 4, Y can be either 2 or -2, therefore its a relation because there is MORE than one value of Y for one value of X.

The vertical line test is basiclly, if you have a graph of somesort u take a vertical line or something like a ruler(or pencil) then u carry it accross (horizontally) along the X axis if the line that was made by the graph thouches the vertical line(ruler or pencil) in more than one point then its a realtion if through out the entire test it touches only one point its a function.

The vertical line test, shown graphically.The Vertical Line Test is a test to determine if a relation or its graph is a function or not. For a relation or graph to be a function, it can have at most a single y-value for each x-value. Thus, a vertical line drawn at any x-position on the graph of a function will intersect the graph at most once.

To use the vertical line test graphically, take a ruler or other “vertical line” and move it from one end of the x axis to the other. If the graph intersects the ruler or vertical line more than once at any given point, the graph is not a function. However, if the graph intersects the vertical line only once at any given point, it is a function.

I will try to explain this the best I can.

Functions are equations were F(x) is equal to something. If you are given a problem that says find F(x) for 9 or something, you just plug 9 in for the x value of that function.

Domain is just the X values in a set of points.

Range are the Y values in a set of points.

The vertical line test is a simple way of telling if a graph is a function or not. If you have a circle, for example, as your graph, it will NOT pass the vertical line test because there would be more than 1 of the same values for X. If you have a straight line, it will be a function because there will be different X values for every Y value. You cannot have 2 or more of the same domain values for a function.

Function is when you have an input and an output. If you an input, but not an output, it’s not a function or vice versa.

Relations is any graphs that doesn’t pass the vertical line test.

Domain is the x axis.

For example, x+3 Domain: (all real numbers)

Range is the y axis.

Vertical line test whether the graph is a function. If it passes more then one point on the graph, it is not a function.

Horizontal line test if the function if one to one and can’t pass more than one point.
