please helpppp?

I have so much summer reading for the honors english class i am taking. School starts in a week. I am supposed to read Travels with Charley by john steinbeck and write a dialectic notebook on it and take part in a seminar discussion on it when school starts. I finished the notebook for it but I did a realy bad job. i completely missed the main pointsd and my rsponses were incomplete and short. I have to read the Color of water and write a diaectic notebook on it. I haven’t started. Then I have to read The Jungle BY upton sinclair and take a test on it the first week of school. I also have to read When Things fall apart by chinua achebe and write an essay on it when school starts. Everything is graded. I dont want to do badly. I want to re-do the travels with charley notebook. and the jungle is so boring i cant get past the first page. I only have one week. What should i do?? I am so stressed but i just dont feel like working.

Stick with The Jungle – it’s really fascinating when you get into it – much like Fast Food Nation, but written back then. Lots of gross disgusting things in it.

Read each book. Don’t re-read or re-do Charley because you don’t have time. Don’t do the notebooks yet, wait until you’re read the books. You do have time to do all the reading if you get off the computer and get on it NOW.

For Charley, get Cliff Notes & redo notebook when you have time.

It sounds like you are in desperate need of cliff’s notes/sparknotes. I have only read one of those books, so all I could help you with is “Things Fall Apart.” Fork out the 5 or so dollars a piece for the notes and get those books done. Get quotes out of the books for your journals/essays. If you have random quotes that you can assign meanings to, your English teachers will eat it up. As for “Things Fall Apart,” Okonkwo undergoes this horrible life degradation. Focus on the way that Things Fall Apart and think about what “horrible” things may have happened in the book and why they happened. What does it mean that everything in Okonkwo’s world is changing? How might that relate to you? Remember, nothing is WRONG unless you don’t have text evidence from it. Pull other sources that you know. Everything from the essay you have to write doesn’t have to come from the book. If you just use book quotes/happenings and connect them elsewhere, it makes things so much easier for you and will give you probably a better grade.

Cliff’s notes will help you with details and main points that you might miss while reading, although you still need to read the literature if you want a good grade. I really see no way around it. Sounds like an extremely full load of work for just 1 class. Maybe you should have read over the summer?

Another suggestion, find someone who has taken the class before. Maybe a friend or search Facebook/Myspace for people who have taken the course previously?

When you think of all the things in a long list like the one you’ve written it seems horribly daunting.

So, take each, one at a time. Perhaps start with the one you feel more confident about…but the main thing is to get started, and although you should have started sooner, accept the fact you didn’t and GET Going NOW.

You’ll find, as soon as you have completed one of the items you’ll see the list is not totally impossible….But, you must begin and don’t wait for more answers. ONLY YOU Yourself can do these…you owe it to yourself to give it your best.

One, Two, Three…GO!

Funny I could not finish Travels with Charley to save my life but I found the Jungle to be a fantastic book.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. You just have to get busy.

try meditating for a little while in the morning. then re-do your notebook for the first book you were supposed to read. if it’s close to supper, eat, meditate again, and start reading your other book. there is only so much you can get done in a week, but it’s better to have some done, rather than nothing.

I think you need to see if you can switch into an easier english class before school starts. If you waited this long to get started on the work, you just don’t have the effort it would take to do well in this honors class. Talk to your school counselor and see if there’s some way you can switch out of this class and into one that’s more your level.

i got kicked out of honors english after 2 years of it because i let my grades slip last semester. all i can recommend on the boring book is just read a few pages, even if you arent taking any of it in, and then it should get easier to read after you get past the intro. maybe visualize the cahracters, or pretend that you yourself are one of them?

good luck! i know how much it all sucks!!

If you don’t feel like working then what would you want people to suggest? Honestly, if you don’t give a crap about reading these books then why care so much about doing well in a class you obviously don’t care for?

Subtle…
Maybe you could find information online about the books and get the basics?

Just make sure that you pick up on the main points of the book and get a feel for what exactly is happening.
