Please help…but please do explain how you come about the answer. I have two problems I am stuck on…?

Rule: Simply each, assume that the variable is positive.

Let “V” represent the square root symbol.

a. 3 / V x

b. -7 / V y

I tried multiplying a by the square root of x over the square root of x, and I got 3 V x over x and didn’t know where to go from there. Since I’m not sure if I’m on the right track, I have not yet tried problem b.

Thank you.

Just do the opposite.

a. 3√x

3² (which means 3×3) is the opposite of √, which means it is equal to the unknown variable, x

3²=x

Solve 3² to get x

9=x

b. -7√y

-7² (which means -7x(-7)) is the opposite of √, which means it is equal to the unknown variable, y

-7²=y

Solve -7² to get y

49=y

Hope you understand it now 🙂
