The idea is to give your brain multiple pathways to get to the information. There are a few ways that mnemonicists use:

1. Associate each word with an object you already know about. Picture a place you know well like your room, or the inside of your car, and picture each thing in your room and when you think about it associate it with one of the words. You’ll then be able to recall the words by recalling the scene. It sounds silly but professional recallers (yes, they exist) swear by this method – called the Method of Loci.

2. Make a song about the words – if you’ve ever memorized the fifty states by singing that song (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona Arkansas) you’ll know how this works.

3. Make up a story using each word in order.

Just a few ideas…HTH

You might try visualizing a picture in your head that will clue you in to the definition of each word. I don’t know if you are a visual learner or an auditory learner, but you could try that. Be creative with it…something that, when you read the word, you think of the picture that you came up with and can derive the definition.

Also…it’s always better if you rephrase a definiton in your own words…you are much more likely to recall something that you came up with, rather than something that you memorized right out of Websters. So…rephrase it without changing the meaning of the word, and I think you will find it much easier.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Good luck

I’d like to say yes, but unfortunately there’s not much you can do. In my opinion, flashcards are definately the way to go, they get the job done fastest. Repitition is key. It’s also good to say them out loud – it helps your brain memorize the words faster. Good luck with your quiz!

IT DEPENDS… DO YOU JUST HAVE TO MEMORIZE THE WORDS, OR WORDS AND DEFINITIONS, OR SPELLING, ETC… IF ITS JUST MEMORIZING THE 18 WORDS IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER YOU COULD TRY USING A MNEMONIC DEVICE. THIS IS JUST BASICALLY A FORM OF WORDS OR LETTERS THAT ASSIST MEMORY. YOU COULD TRY THIS SITE TO ASSIST WITH SOME AND I’M SURE THERE ARE MANY OTHERS OUT THERE:

make them wildly funny and associated with things you can remember. For example, if my word were something like; “confabulate” which means to “have a conversation” I would say “The con was fabulous, but late when he talked to us”. Each part of the word forms an association, funny thing is, such techniques help us remember.

I got a group of teenagers to remember “confabulate” by making it sound like you might be interested in sex. For example “Hi. Would you like to confabulate with me?” said in a bar room pickup tone.

You get the picture.

Good luck in your quest.
