Of Mice & Men?

I have a question about Of Mice & Men:

What motivates George with his relationship with Lennie?

(this question is refering prior to chapter 3)

Companionship…more than anything else…

remember this crucial quote from the book:

“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place….With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us…”

“An’ why? Because…because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.”

I don’t think I really understand your question. Are you asking why is George always with Lennie? Like, why does he bother to have a relationship with him? If that’s your question, then I have an answer for that. After Aunt Clara’s (or someone like that) death, Lennie has no one…only George. So in a way, you can say that George feels he need to take care of Lennie. Also, Lennie is not like an ordinary man. He has the brain of a child, which make it difficult for Lennie to take care of himself. That’s why is so dependent on George.

he`s got a friend and he`s not lonely any more and poor lennie well lennie`s just himself ,not really grown up, so i think george like`s to be the adult , and have the responsibility. in that iam the brother you never had and same for him .

Pity. As in feeling sorry for the unfortunate.
