Of Mice and Men?

If anyone has read this book could you please tell me your views on how Steinbeck presents life on a ranch in 1930s California. Thanks! X

Well its not just any old ranch it’s the period in history which it is set that is the reason for the characters isolation. Its 1930 and the Great depression is sweeping America, meaning life as people knew it before is non existent. There’s a huge lack of jobs available, nothing to do and everyone’s out for them selves EXPECT George and Lenny who perhaps haven’t grasped the seriousness of this situation and instead insist that “I have you and you’ve got me”. Because of the differences we has readers are aware that George should probably just leave lennie, his attachment to him is the reason for their continuous down fall as Lenny is unable to do as George says. Ultimately the ranch is presented as an isolating place as the characters are enabling to interact with each other; this is largely due to their differences. The characters on the ranch all have dreams and aspirations which aid them in continuing in such conditions. The Ranch acts almost as a barrier between them and the real world as they are continuously surrounded by each other.

Anymore and I’ll have to charge!
