Fertile soil. Most people living in the colonial South (American Southeast) farmed crops such as tobacco and rice. With Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin in the late 1790’s, cotton emerged as a profitable cash crop. Thousands of slaves were rushed to the cotton plantations in stretching all across the Deep South. After the Civil War, the slaves were freed, though most were too poor to move north. They remained in the South facing racism and segregation.

I live in Florida so i guess that is as far southeast as it gets.

People settled here because of the great agriculture abilities of the land and the nice weather. Alot of people vacation here, love the weather and beautiful scenery and and end up moving here for good!

Some famous people: Lynard Skynard – the band from Jacksonville Fl; Ernest Hemingway- famous writer who retired in the Florida Keys; Leo Gallagher- a man famous for smashing watermelons at concerts
