Let a be the longest side of the triangle, and b, c be the other two sides.

Work out s = b^2 + c^2 – a^2

If s = 0, the triangle is right-angled.

If s > 0, the triangle is acute.

If s < 0, the triangle is obtuse. This is derived from the cosine rule: a^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc cos(A) where A is the angle opposite side a. Rearranging: cos(A) = (b^2 + c^2 - a^2) / 2bc. b and c are positive, and therefore the sign of b^2 + c^2 - a^2 gives the sign of cos(A). Angles over 90deg in a triangle have cos(A) < 0, angles under 90deg have cos(A) > 0, and for a right angle

cos(A) = 0.
