need help with my short story idea?

so i had an idea : this woman is rushing to get to a job interview. in order to get there on time she steals a cab that someone is trying to get to. she gets the job but hte personshe takes the cab from is killed or greatly affected in a way that comes back around to hurt her.

ex: is the boss’s wife, she dies, he commits suicide, the company closes. but maybe something more common…

BUT. someone said that perhaps she should do something a bit more criminal because stealing cabs happens all the time. this i completely agree with (thx 4 the help!!) but now i dont know what should happen. i want it to be something she wouldnt normally really feel bad about… idk.

I like your idea! I don’t think you should change it, but I see one faulty: Can’t the person trying to get the cab in the first place just catch another taxi? I assume this is taking place in a city, like New York City, so I would imagine that there are plenty of cabs.

Instead, maybe set it in the desert or a less populated place where there aren’t taxis. That way, the lady can just steal a normal car and the person who she stole it from was greatly affected/killed. The person who was affected could be the boss (I think that is a great idea that you had and it will be more believable in a less populated area). Maybe even the boss needed the car because he/she was running from villians? It could turn into a great, suspensful story. Have fun with it!

I really like your first idea better.

It illustrates the point of karma. How can one little, seemingly irrelevant thing come back to bite you? Its a thinker.

I don’t know if the effect should be so drastic though. I think you can manipulate things to make it more intense, and more realistic. Like she gets the job, but the bosses wife dies by some simple complication. Use minute twists through out it, not big events. That way, when everything comes together at the end, the reader realizes what happens and the story is sold.
