During the Middle Ages, a Volcano blew its top, and snet a cloud of dust blocking sunlight … it was called the year with no summer … this led to mass starvation many places in the world, which had a cascade effect … lose a growing season … lose food .. people stave to death … not enough farmers … so lose food in next growing season when the sunlight returns. Because so many people starving, their resistance to disease weakened, and Plague followed.

This led to a change in government to store food and grain reserves from one year to the next.

Christopher Columbus believed the world was not flat, that you could sail west to get to the east. At the time there was a lot of banditry against caravans traveleing between Europe and China, and merchants wanted a safer way to travel. Turns out planet Earth was MUCH larger than Columbus calculated, with “a new world” between Europe and his destination.

Can you imagine what the world today might be like if the New World had never been discovered?

During WW II, Radar was invented, developed, played a major role in that war.

After the war came the birth of modern aviation, which would not have been practical without radar to help manage traffic in the skies. Radar has also spawned a branch of Astronomy known as Radar or Radio Astronomy which has told us a lot more about the Universe than we could ever find out from Visual Telescopes.

A horse eats 5 times as much as a human, and does 5 times the work. Given that men are smarter than horses, slavery made sense. The horse collar was invented about 1500 years ago in China, and fairly quickly moved across the globe. With a horse collar, a horse eats 5 times as much as a human and does 10 times the work. The horse collar eventually ended slavery, because it was cheaper to use horses than slaves.

Moveable clay type was invented in 1041 in China by Bi Sheng. That was the first step in mass communications and today’s information economy.

Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire in 1872. It made it practical to fence the west, ending “the tragedy of the commons.” The end result was cheap food. A people that struggles to feed itself is going to be violent and hateful.
