yes, you’re just not allowed to say things like ” I think” avoid using I or your opinion.

ex: “I think that so and so is great.”

To get the definitive answer, visit your local library and look at an MLA Handbook. Many libraries keep the newest one in the Reference collection, but put the older copies in the check out collection. Some libraries have access to the MLA Handbook online. You can call or e-mail the Reference Librarian to see what your library provides. (Again, different libraries have different information styles. If your library does online chat or e-mail reference there will be a link to it on the library’s webpage.)

With that said, “You” is informal. Most writers avoid it in reports and formal papers. If you don’t find the answer you want in the MLA book, check the 800s in the Dewey Classification for a book about report writing.

You can avoid the word you by rewording a sentence or using “One” where you would use you.

Example:

One can avoid using the word “you” by rewording the sentence.

or

Rewording the sentence can eliminate the need for the word “you”.

No. MLA papers take an objective stance. Use the word “one” instead.

I’m not sure if it would be allowed or not, but it seems really informal. Like another poster stated, it would be better to use the word “one” instead (ex: “One might think that it is a good idea to _________, but it might be a better idea to _______ instead.”)
