The base metric unit for volume is the cubic metre. It doesn’t matter if you’re measuring liquids solids or gas. Just as the metre can be multiplied or divided by prefixes (kilo = thousand, centi = hundredth, milli = thousandth) the volume units can be brought down to size by prefixes.

Be careful: with cubic measure, you have to cube the prefix values.

So you can use cubic metres for large volumes, cubic centimetres for small volumes (a teaspoon is about 5 cc), cubic millimetres for tiny volumes.

There are 10,000 cubic centimetres in a cubic metre (100 x 100 x 100) and a billion cubic millimetres in a cubic metre (1000 x 1000 x 1000).

The litre is 1000 cubic centimetres (or a thousandth of a cubic metre) which is a handy size for orange juice, milk, fuel etc..

A millilitre (mL) is a thousandth of a litre and is the same as a cubic centimetre.

So for some common comparisons, a can of Cola is 330 mL, a small shampoo bottle could be 125 mL, a wine bottle could be 700 mL or 70cL (centilitres)

The modern version of the metric system is the SI (Système International d’Unités). The unit for volume (any volume, not only liquid) is cubic metre, m³. Multiples and submultiples can be created with prefixes, eg cubic decimetre (dm³) or cubic centimetre (cm³). Not an SI unit, but accepted for use with SI units is litre (l or L). 1 l = 1 dm³ = 0.001 m². Multiples and submultiples of litre can also be created with prefixes eg: 1 cl = 0.01 l 1 ml = 0.001 l = 1 cm³ 2 hl = 100 l = 0.1 m³

The cubic meter. The Liter is an older unit, no longer a recommended part of the SI system. One litre is equal to 0.001 cubic metre .

Litre is the standard unit. This is normaly used or if using a smaller volume, milliliter (mL) is used. 1000mL=1L
