Math word problems?

I can’t seem to get them. “/

1. In 1987, a small town had a population of 15, 500. Since then, there has been a decline of 175 residents each year. Find a linear equation giving the population [y], in terms of the number of years since 1987 [x]. What is the population of of the small town in 2007?

2. A pediatrician prescribed 10 mL per day of a medication for a 30-pound child. The next child was prescribed 20 mL per day. This child weighed 50 pounds. Find a linear equation for prescribing the correct dosage [d] in terms of the child’s body weight [w]. Using this equation, find the dosage for an 85-pound child.

Thanks so much!

1) y=15500 – 175x

population in 2007 = 15500 – 175*(2007-1987) = 12000

2)

by ratio,

(d-10)/(20-10) = (w-30)/(50-30)

i.e d= (w-10)/2

dosage = (85 – 10 )/2 = 37.5

Well, I know you could get the answer for No.1. By subtracting to find the number of years in between, so 2007-1987 would = 20 years. So, to find the population of the small town in 2007 you would work:

15,500-(175 x 20) =12000 But, I’m not sure if they are giving the (y) and (x) as terms they want you to write into the equation? Sorry, I hope it atleast helps you some!

1. 15500-175x=y

x is the number of years elapsed since 1987

y is the population

then u take ur answer /by 15500 and u get ur =

in 2 i have no idea

For number two, I would start by finding the ratio (r). Then…

d = rw
