math question:fractions!?

im taking a very basic math course in college but since i did this crap in fifth grade im actually having trouble with it, which makes me feel like crap. i need help with this:

what is 8 and 3/4 (eight and three quarters) -5 and 7/8(minus five and seven eighths) ?

i made both of the fractions the same and got 8and6/8 – 5and 7/8, but how do i subtract 7/8 from 6/8? i know i have to borrow, how do i do it?

This might help. Notice that 8/8= 1. So

8 and 6/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 8/8 + 8/8 + 8/8 +8/8 + 8/8 + 8/8 + 6/8 = 70/8

5 and 7/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 +(three more times)+ 7/8 = 47/8

So your problem is now (70 – 47)/8 = 23/8

And 8 goes into 23 two times with 7 left over

23/8 = 2 and 7/8.

You have to covert the numbers into complete fractions/

Multiply the denominator by the whole number and then add the numerator. That is your new numerator and place it over the same denominator

First amount: 8 3/4 Multiply the denominator(4) by the whole number (8) and then add the numerator (3). That is your new numerator(35) and place it over the same denominator (4).

(4×8)+3= 35 then place over the same denominator

ans: 35/4

Second amount:

(8×5) + 7= 47

ans: 47/8

Next you have to make the fractions have a common denominator. You can do that by taking the first answer 35/4 and multiply both the top and bottom by 2.

You now get 70/8 – 47/8 = 23/8

Then you can reduce the fraction to the smallest term by dividing 8 into 23 and placing the remainder over the denominator.

8 goes into 23= 2 times with 7 remaining

answer is: 2 7/8 (two and seven eights)

Hope that helps. Also many colleges have math labs to help if you feel other topics are difficult.

Crap? Math is fun!

Good start!

8 3/4 – 5 7/8 = ?

8 6/8 – 5 7/8 = ?

7 (8+6)/8 – 5 7/8 = ?

7 14/8 – 5 7/8 = ?

?=2 7/8

another way would be

8 3/4 – 5 7/8 = ?

8 6/8 – 5 7/8 = ?

(8*8+6)/8 – (5*8+7)/8 = ?

(64+6)/8 – (40+7)/8 = ?

70/7 – 47/8 = ?

(70-47)/8 = ?

23/8 = ? (23= 16+7)

2 7/8 = ?

Well, 40/8 = 5 so 47/8 would equal 5 7/8. Perhaps if you turned both into fractions, subtraction will be much easier.

Eh… neither… yet i assume i will decide for English. I used to love English greater yet intense college made it boring. -_- yet I nevertheless love writing as a interest (and hate math, even even with the undeniable fact that i’m no longer undesirable at it) so i will merely say English.
