Math Problem?

Okay, I have a problem solving-type question in my math homework, but I’m not sure how to solve it…

I’m not looking for the answer to the problem, but just as to which equation I could use.

The problem:

For an art project, you make a square print with a side length of 8 inches. You make a frame using strips of wood 1 1/4 inches wide. What is the area of the frame?

What I am confused with: Do you find the area of the square print, or the area of the strips of wood, or do you find the area by using the equation 8 x 1 1/4 ?

Thank You

find area of frame by subtracting area of print from area of the frame with the print inside

(8+1.25+1.25)(8+1.25+1.25)-(8×8)=46.25 square inches

easiest way to solve this is to find the area of the framed print and then subtract the area of the print.

once you frame the print, the outside dimesions are now 10.5 x 10.5, which yields an area of 110.25 sq in

the area of the print is 8 x 8 = 64 sq in

subtract 110.25 – 64 = 46.25 sq in
