math i need help so i can help my son?

Please help I’m trying to get the right answers so I can help my son with his homework..

1. There is a coordinate grid with a line that contains the points (3,-3) and (3,4) describe the slop.

A)positive slope

B)negative slope

C)slope of zero

D)undefined slope

2.There is a coordinate grid with a line that contains the points (1,-3) and (-2,3) Describe the slope of the line

A)positive slope

B)negative slope

C)slope of zero

D)undefined slope

3. There is a coordinate grid containing triangle A B C. The coordinate of point A are (-4,-2). The coordinates of B are (-2,2). The coordinates of point C are (4,-1).Is this triangle a right triangle? Be sure that you show work and explain your answer.

1. The slope is the change in the y-values over the change in the x-values.

(3,-3) and (3,4)

going from -3 to 4 is a seven point change, but going from 3 to 3 is a zero change. 7/0 is undefined.

2. (1,-3) and (-2,3)

the change in the y-values is from -3 to 3 which equals 6.

the change in the x-values from 1 to -2 which equals a -3.

6/-3 = -2 a negative slope.

If you prefer the formula method:

given (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), the

slope equals (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

VERY important to keep make the substration in the same direction each time.

3. For a right triangle, one angle needs to exactly 90 degrees. When lines intersect with with slopes that are the negative inverse of each other, they are perpendicular (90degrees).

Let’s find the slopes of the three lines:

LineAB = (-4,-2) and (-2,2), slope = (2- -2)/(-2 – -4) = 4/2 = 2

LineBC = (-2,2) and (4,-1), slope = (-1-2)/(4- -2) = -3/6 = -1/2

LineAC = (-4,-2) and (4,-1), slope = (-1- -2)/(4- -4) = 1/8

Since 2 and -1/2 are negative inverses of each other, those lines intersect at 90 degrees; thus, forming a right triangle.

1) d- undefined (the slope of a vertical line is undefined- think 3/0) while the slope of a horizontal line is zero)

2) b- negative slope (think of it this way, from either point given, to access the next point on the line following the grid, one has to go first in a positive direction, then in a negative direction.. a negative times a positive still gives you a negative)

3) Yes, this is a right triangle. The easiest way to do this problem is to think logically. In order for a right triangle to exist here, the lines AB and BC must be perpendicular to each other (to form a 90 degree angle). So you must find the slope for each line. The formula for slope is (y2-y1)/(x2-x1).

Therefore, for line AB, the formula looks like:

m=slope

m= (2 – -2)/(-2 – – 4) then you need to cancel out the negatives

m= (2+2)/(-2+4)

m= 4/2

m= 2

For line BC, the formula looks like:

m= (-1 – 2)/ (4 – – 2)

m= -3/ (4+2)

m= -3/6

m= -1/2

In order for lines to be perpendicular to each other, their slopes must be the negative reciprocal of each other. Therefore the negative reciprocal to a slope of 2 (as seen in line AB) is -1/2 (as seen in line BC).

If you have any further questions, you can check this website for an easy explanation. http://www.wtamu.edu/academic/anns/mps/math/mathlab/int_algebra/int_alg_tut15_slope.htm

Hope this helps!

1. D because it’s a vertical line; a horizontal line is a slope of zero because it does not rise, and a vertical is undefined because it could either be straight up, or straight down. Trust me on this, math was my best subject.

2. B because looking from left to right the line goes downhill…so it’s negative.

3. it IS a right triangle, but you have to graph it out to know how, i just drew it out and the top angle is 90 degrees, but it probably has something to do with the slopes of the sides….

1. the slope is positive, but if it were one point more (3,-4) and (3,4) , it would be undefined because its a straight line.

2. The slope of the line is negative because from it falls from the left side

Sorry the third one i have to work out on paper (if i had a paper right now i would…) sorry but I hope i helped

1.) Positive slope.

If you draw out a grid and plot these points, you will see that the line connecting the two point goes from down to up, representing a positive slope.

2.) Negative slope.

Again, if you draw this out, you will see the opposite affect, representing a negative slope.

3.) Yes, this is a right triangle, if you draw it out, you will see the right angle at one of the corners of the triangle.

1. c – its a straight line going up and down

2. b – the slope goes down from left to right

3. No.It would be a right triange if coordinate A was (2,-1)

1) D, it is undefined as it is a vertical line

2) B, negative slope

3)

vector AB(vector from A to B) = (2,4)

vector CB(vector from C to B) = (-6,3)

dot product of these = zero

(2*(-6)) + (4*3) = 0

so the lines AB and CB are perpendicular

hence there is a right angle at point B

1. D verticle line definition is infinite or undefinted slope

2. B Slope goes down (like this…\)

3. I can not help…sorry.

So the teacher decides it is a good day to test the childrens’ perceptions. She tells the class, “I have something behind myback it is round and it is red. What is it?” Bobby raises his hand and says “I know teacher I know. Is it a Ball?” The teacher said, “No Bobby, but I like your way of thinking.” Susies raised her and and said. “I know teacher, it’s an apple.” The teacher said “That’s right Susie it is an apple.” Bobby goes crazy jumping around and yelling at the the teacher “An apple is not round!” The teacher says, “That’s enough Bobby, take your seat and behave.” Bobby sits down and raises his hand. The teacher asks, “What do you want?” Bobby says, “I have one for you teacher. I have something under my desk. It is long and hard and has a pink tip at the end of it. What is it?” The teacher flushed screamed “Bobby, I am calling your mother about this!” Bobby responded, “Wrong teacher. It is a pencil but I like your way of thinking too.”
