Math Help!?

Heres the question:

The Longest human powered sporting event is the Tour de France cycling race. The record average speed for this race is 25.88 miles per hour, which was attained by Lance Armstrong in 2005.

(this is actually 2 questions)

a. The race was 2,242 miles long. How long did it take Armstrong to complete the race in 2005?

b. Suppose Lance had reduced his average speed by 0.1 mile per hour, by how much would his time have changed?

Can you please answer this? or at LEAST tell me how to do it?

okay. if he rides 25.88 miles per hour, that is 25.88 each hour. so, you need to find out how many of these “25.88 miles” go into the total 2,242 miles. so, you will have to divide. you want to break the total up into groups of 25.88, in effect. each of those “groups” of 25.88 miles will take one hour; how many groups you have is how many hours it tood.

if he reduced his speed by 0.1 miles per hour, he would then be traveling at a rate of 25.78 miles per hour. this is almost identical to the question above … but you now are breaking (or dividing) the total into “groups” of 25.78. each of these “groups” again is an hour. to find out by how much his time changed, you need to find the “difference” which is the answer to a subtraction problem. subtract the two numbers and that is the difference or amount of change.

set it up fraction style is the only way I know to do it

25.88 miles/ 1hr therefore he’s going 25.88 mph

then you’ve got his miles but no time so you do

2242 miles/ X hours

Have you done this yet? If I remember correctly you have to multiply in X “design”

1 x 2242 miles giving you 2242

Then you take your 2242 and divide it by the remaining numeral which is 25.88 therefore giving you your X which will be 86.63 hours

If you’ll write it down on paper and put 25.88 miles over 1 hour and then put 2242 miles over X you should see what I mean. When you see what I mean do the equation the same way for question b. but just change your 25.88 to 25.78. I HOPE i helped!

Distance = Rate x Time

a)

2242 miles = 25.88 miles/hour x Time

2242/25.88 hours = Time

b)

2242 miles = (25.88-0.1)miles/hour x Time

2242 miles = (25.78) miles/hour x Time

2242/25.78 hours = Time

The Change in Time is

[ (2242/25.78) – (2242/25.88) ] hours

Use long division to covert the fractions into a decimal number

2,242 miles divided by 25.88 MPH = 86.6306 hours

2,242 miles divided by 25.78 MPH = 86.96664 hours

86.96664 hours – 86.6306 hours = .336041 hours

the formula is d=rt

d=distance (2,242)

r=rate of travel (25.88mph)

t=time (unknown)

2,242=25.88x

/25.88 /25.88

86.6 = x

87hours = x

2,242=25.78x

/25.78 /25.78

86.96 = x

87hours = x
