If you mean power,
4^(1/2) = sqrt(4)
sqrt(4) – y = 4
y = sqrt(4) – 4
y = 2 – 4
y = -2
if it’s a fraction
4 and 1/2 = 9/2
9/2 – y = 4
9 – 2y = 8
2y = 8 – 9
y = 1/2

4 1/2 – y = 4
1. 4 1/2 – y = 4 Subtract 4 1/2 from both sides of the equation
-4 1/2 – 4 1/2
———- ———
0 1/2
2. y = 1/2 This is what you are left with
3. y = 1/2 is the answer

One way is this
41/2 = 8/2
9/2 – y = 4
subtract 9/2 from both sides
-y = -1/2
y = 1/2

4 1/2 = 4 + y; subtract 4 from both sides
