major happening in texas before 1990 good and interesting enough to write a 6-8 page paper on…details inside

In my Texas History class, we have to write about something that happened in Texas or about someone who done something in Texas before the 90’s. The book that I must read about the subject must be at least 200 pages. Then I must write a 6-8 page paper about it. Needless to say it has to be at least semi interesting in order for me to write a half decent paper on. I was born in 88, and I’ve been doing research on this for a while but can’t seem to find anything worth writing about. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Here are a few…

1) The hurricane of 1900 that slammed into Galveston <-- probably lots of books on that including biographies. 2) What about the oil rush? 3) Try finding information on congresswoman Barbara Jordan. She broke a lot of racial barriers in Texas. 4) What about the real estate crash in the late 80s. It was during the Savings & Loan crash 5) What about the dust storms? I think that some of the dust storms in the 1930s involved parts of Texas.

David Koresh (The Branch Davidians) in Waco. I think it was in 1990, though.

Sorry, I just checked and it was 1993. The assassination of President Kennedy is a good one but you may not be the only one writing about it.

Okay, I found a link that should be useful to you about Texas history. It looks like all the important events are listed by century and then by year.

This one seems interesting:

“1954 – Texas women gain the right to serve on juries.”

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. You should be able to find a lot of material about that. Early Texas history is very interesting. The Runaway Scrape is about the Mexican Army trying to chase the Texians (that’s what Texans used to be called) out of Texas. The Battle of San Jacinto is great too. Lots of stories about the Texas Rangers.

I would do it on Sam Houston. Be sure to include how he tried in vain to keep Texas from seceeding from the Union.

My other choice is a stretch, but Robert La Salle and his buddy Tonti were really cool French explorers who went all through the middle part of the States and Canada way way before anybody. Here is the Texas connection. La Salle crashed in Texas while trying to find the mouth of the Mississippi from the Gulf side. He set up a fort there and… well, here is a wik site to get you started,if you are interested, but they have a really bad picture of him.

Good Luck to you and don’t mess with Texas

The political career of Lyndon Baines Johnson in Texas and the US Senate is fascinating in of itself, but heavily covered.

Herman Lay…didn’t he found his snack food empire in Texas?

Who are the railroad pioneers of Texas?

Who founded Texas Instruments after leaving Fairchild Semiconductor? How did this chain of events influence the opening of Intel and the Silicon Valley?

How did the purchase of Radio Shack by Tandy Corporation influence the American electronics marketplace and ultimately it’s decline as we knew it? Hint: Tandy was known primarily as a leather goods and tools marketer at some point long before the TRS-80.

A few I can tweak from my noggin for what’s it’s worth. If it makes sense or not, food for thought.

If you want something with a little contemporary applicability, something on Lady Bird Johnson (LBJ’s wife) who recently passed away might be good. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center was founded in 1982:

The hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900 is pretty interesting.
